Dorset Police aim to build a workforce that reflects the rich diversity and complexities of our communities by attracting the best talent from the widest pool of people.
We use the term ‘under-represented’ to describe where the diversity of the communities we serve is not accurately reflected in our workforce and Dorset Police are proud to have a policy where we utilise Positive Action to help us achieve this.
Positive Action offers various support, such as telephone advice, webinars, online programs and 1-2-1 mentoring, to encourage candidates from all diverse communities to apply for any policing roles. The selection process is the same for everyone and is based solely on merit.
We offer support to the following under-represented groups to join our police family:
- Women
- Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities
- Disabled people

About the Office of the PCC
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner is a non-political, impartial organisation. It exists to support the work of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC). The PCC is an elected official who represents local people and ensures that the police service is effective and efficient.
In order for the PCC to be able to successfully undertake his duties he is supported by a small team of staff within the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC).
The OPCC provides support in a number of areas including strategic planning, priority setting, budget and financial decision making, commissioning and partnerships, performance monitoring, governance and scrutiny, consultation and engagement, press and media and general administrative duties.

About the PCC
Since taking up office, David has taken on a national role as the joint lead on alcohol and substance misuse for the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners. He shares this role with Durham PCC Joy Allen.
The PCC’s continuing vision is to make Dorset the safest county in the UK through making it his mission to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour. His values are Justice, Fairness, Community and Respect and his purpose is to keep people safe and secure.
His Police and Crime Plan based on what the people of Dorset told him has radically changed Dorset Police to be tough on crime, keeping people safe and put victims first.
The plan is working. Anti-social behaviour, violent crime, rural crime and crime generally are all significantly reduced.
The PCC always says that this isn’t a job to him – it’s a vocation. For him it is about nothing more than to make the place we all care about the safest in the country.
